LIVING LISTENING WHALES: On a Mission for Hidden Underwater Sounds of Iceland
Husavik is a northern Icelandic town, known as the whale watching capital of Iceland. It’s also a base for marine mammal research.
We followed Johannes and Ville, who came to Iceland to finish a mission to learn about the life of harbour porpoises in the area. They monitor harbour porpoises in the Baltic Sea off Finland, where they have never seen these small dolphin-like whales.
In Iceland, the harbour porpoises are more common, but still hard to spot. That’s why the work is done by underwater microphones.
How is the normal life while studying species living underwater? What can we learn by listening to whales?
